How full is your kettle? Has it reached the tipping point?

loadgame_tippingpoint_logo I use the “kettle” as a symbolic description in an effort to articulate total stress load to my clients.   Each and every one of us has our own kettle.  When we were young the kettle appeared to have little filling.  Over time, after years of exposures to toxins, medications, lifestyle choices, internal stressors and nutritional deficiencies, the kettle begins to fill.   Each and every individual has available resources (referred to as nutrients) to help empty out their “kettle”.  How well each of us recovers from the kettle filling depends on the amount of resources.  Essentially the formula of resiliency= resources (minus) total “fillings”.  In other words, if the kettle “fillings” outnumber the resources the “kettle” tips.   The tipping point is when an individual becomes highly symptomatic.  According to Soram Khalsa, MD, the tipping of the kettle leads to either malignancy or chronic inflammation. It’s essential to reduce how full your kettle is.

Review this list of potential internal stressors.

1. Sugar and refined foods.
2. Hidden food sensitivities.
3. Nutritional deficiencies.
4. Toxins including heavy metals.
5. Digestive issues (the gut is often referred to as ‘the second brain’.
6. Stress (emotional, trauma, social or work related)
7. Inadequate exercise.
8. Insufficient sleep.
9. Chronic infections (viruses, parasites, bacteria, fungus, etc).

Could these stressors be filling your kettle? How full is your kettle?

BREAKING NEWS: If you take aspirin you MUST read this

Aspirin has been encouraged by physicians to their patients for prevention of heart disease and stroke.  It is recommended to be used daily by  Bayer, the German-based manufacturer of aspirin, the company that in this past year alone has reaped the awards at $1.27Billion dollars in sales (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-05-05/limit-use-of-aspirin-to-prevent-heart-attack-fda-says.html)  while putting thousands of people around the world at risk.  Such a great risk that the FDA has issued this warning:

“FDA has concluded that the data do not support the use of aspirin as a preventive medication by people who have not had a heart attack, stroke or cardiovascular problems, a use that is called ‘primary prevention.’ In such people, the benefit has not been established but risks — such as dangerous bleeding into the brain or stomach — are still present.” (http://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/ConsumerUpdates/ucm390539.htm)

If you know of someone that has been urged by their physician to take aspirin on a daily basis, please share this.

Last night’s presentation on Weight Gain

Thank you to all that attended last night to my first presentation on stress and weight gain. I do hope that it answered any questions you may have surrounding weight gain and provided you with some tools to use. I am working on uploading the videos and should have them up and available to you shortly. Here are a few items I hope you took away with you:
1. All calories are not created equal
2. The importance of keeping your blood sugar stable, by avoiding refined flours and sugars and placing emphasis on balancing your meals.
3. Chronic stress (both internal and external) how it affects the body.
4. Survival mode (fight/flight) and how that may prevent you from losing weight.

I’d appreciate any other feedback you may have in preparation for next week’s session on the digestive system and allergies.  I’ll be uploading the videos soon and will keep you posted.
Be well,

Treat your little Valentines with healthy love ideas.

Better last minute than not, right?  I have so much to update all of you on about all the neat things I’ve learned in the past few weeks on health and wellness, but before I do I wanted to share some last minute Valentine day ideas.  A friend of mine, Dr. Shanna Bissonette shared this idea with me today about replacing a sugar-free Valentine with a glow stick.  Clever and I thought worth sharing.

valentinesday

How about a little treat for the morning of Valentine’s Day : Heart Shaped Pancakes.  This video shows how the chefs mixed their favorite pancake mix (gluten free, paleo, whole grain, etc) inside the bag.  Then cutting the tip of the plastic bag allows the cook to ‘draw’ a heart shape with the batter on the pan (be sure to fill in the heart as well).  Cute and fun.   You can watch the brief video here

Enjoy and Be well,

Lynn

P.S. I’ll be posting soon all of the wonderful health tips I’ve learned in the last few weeks.  Stay tuned.

What do Carol Burnett and vitamins have in common?

I’m a 70’s child.  The Carol Burnett show was one of my favorite forms of entertainment. 35 years and two children later I found a copy of Carol Burnett’s Greatest Episodes on DVD.  I purchased it right away and couldn’t wait to share the episodes with my children.   We unpacked the DVD just a couple of weeks ago and began to watch the first episode of the series.

The DVD began with the opening of the first episode spent with Carol Burnett on the stage taking questions and answers from her audience members.  The audience was packed with people dressed in their time and age:  in 70’s fashion.  Afros, long hair, bell bottoms, multiple patterns and the Dorothy Hamil haircut were modeled by several of the audience members. Carol Burnett standing with a strong poise on the stage graciously accepting all questions from audience members.  She did it with grace, confidence, energy and humor responding to each question with care.    One of the first questions from the audience members  directed this question to Carol Burnett:  “How do  you always seem to have so much energy”?  She answered ‘I take my Vitamins and many of them’.  She then responded with ‘Find a good nutritionist.

We then proceeded to watch episodes, laughing hysterically at the idiosyncrancies of life.  Carol Burnett’s energy was captured in her every move, gesture and response.  My children found her hilarious and I learned something new from her.  If the right vitamans and supplements are the vitality behind Carol Burnett then we too can achieve those same results.

Fat is not your fault

Yes; you read that correctly.  Many mainstream “integrative” Doctors that work within the ‘whole body’ approach are declaring this to be true.  Fat is not simply a result of over eating and not exercising.    Fat is  rather a result of a breakdown in your gastrointestinal system and ultimately a result of the culprit behind many illnesses… inflammation.  This is why fad diets prove to be ineffective for the long term.

How could this be?  Bacterial imbalances in the GI tract (also known as our ‘gut’) happen when processed, nutrient-depleted and sugared foods and/or infections (named as ‘invaders’) flood the digestive system. The result is a battleground.  The immune system makes all of its necessary attempts to defend itself from the “invaders”.  The ‘gut’ protective shield (also known as the mucosal barrier) becomes permeable (damaged) and food particles now escape from the ‘gut’ and leak into the bloodstream.  The result is massive inflammation, also known as swelling.

What to do:

Hire a professional to help you identify the following:

  1. Identify through an IgG test what your food sensitivities are.
  2. Avoid those foods for a minimum of three months.
  3. Provide support for the digestive system with digestive enzymes.
  4. Heal the mucosal barrier.

No more invaders; no more swelling.

Why all the supplements?

pillsThere is much discussion about supplements these days: what supplements to take; do they contradict each other; is it really necessary to take supplements?

It has become more present that the foods we eat today are not the same foods that our ancestors ate 100 years ago.  Seeds have been genetically modified, the soils have been contaminated, whole foods have become refined foods, pesticides have become in mainstream use and fast food is more popular than ever.    Over time our whole foods have become depleted, lacking in nutrients and vitamins; what the body needs 24 hours a day to function optimally.

What about the fortified foods you ask? Fortified foods have been supplemented by the Food and Drug Administration to meet minimum requirements as determined by the FDA.    And yet with all of the fortified foods being consumed approximately 70% of Americans are Vitamin D deficient, for example (per Joseph Mercola, MD).  As Edward Giovannucci, MD, Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology at Harvard University states:

‘Milk alone is unlikely to be an adequate source of vitamin D. True, milk is fortified in the U.S. (it is not fortified in most countries). Each glass of fortified milk should contain about 100 IU of vitamin D (but on average, it may contain only 50 IU). So someone would have to drink at least 8 glasses of milk per day to get 800 IU of vitamin D. Moreover, most experts now conclude that 1,000 to 2,000 IU per day of vitamin D may be what we need for optimum health.’

I’ve recently read 1000IU’s per 25 lbs is the recommended dose of Vitamin D3 (per Dr. John Cannell of the Vitamin D Council).  This means that a 150 lb person would have to drink anywhere from 60 to 120 glasses of milk per day.  Get the picture? And this is only vitamin D we’re talking about.  I’ll save B Vitamins, Vitamin A, K,C and others for another time.

So what to take? Here are suggestions:

  1.  Find out what you’re deficient in.  Discuss with a practitioner what your needs are.
  2.  Avoid the ‘one size fits all approach’ with a multi-vitamin until you know what your body needs.
  3.  Purchase supplements from only reputable, quality manufacturers.  Many supplements are stuffed with fillers that are unneeded and can even be damaging depending on the individual.

Each and every one of us an individual.  Be sure to be supplemented like one.

Be well,

Lynn

But why?

Advocate for healing

Do I or my child feel this bad and yet the Doctors can’t find anything wrong with him?

Why do I keep taking different drugs but they are not helping?

Why am I tired all of the time?

If any of these questions seem familiar, like they do to millions of people, know you’re not alone.  Doctors are there for you when you are sick and symptomatic.  Their methods of treatment are allopathic; in that what is directly related to your symptom is what they’ll treat.  As a functional nutritionist we look at the whole body and how systems, specifically the hormone, immune, digestion, detoxification and elimination systems are functioning.  Any breakdown in these systems can result in dys-function and ultimately symptoms.

Often times these symptoms are found to be not thought to be directly related to the cause.  For example, a breakdown in digestion resulted in a gut malfunction and headaches.  Now these headaches can be addressed with an anti-inflammatory, cafeine induced medication, through the allopathic model; but what is the likelihood of that symptom returning?  Very high.  The only resolve the individual will have is knowing that there’s a pill that can help them; albeit temporarily.  Relief is necessary, but what if you could find out the why and get rid of them altogether? Keep asking why and seek to find the anwers; they will come if you look in the right places.

Be healthy and happy!
