When low-carb is too low

Eat paleo!  Stay away from carbs! Go Vegan!  Which diet to choose can be confusing.  Plus, we are all individuals with individual biochemical needs so choosing one diet to “fit into” may not work.

Yes, Paleo is popular right now.  Some Paleo followers will insist that a “true” Paleo diet doesn’t allow sugars, such as honey; others will tell you “their” Paleo diet does.   The key here is to understand that the best diet for you is the “YOU” diet; based on your needs.  I would agree that grains, breads and pastas do not provide “essential” nutrients like protein, that offers “essential” amino acids and fats that offer “essential” fatty acids.  But, some individuals can tolerate more grains in their diet than others.

So, how to know if you should consider more carbs? Chris Kresser is an outstanding researcher; one I have utmost respect for.  His assistant recently wrote an article entitled “Is a low-carb diet ruining your life?”.  The author makes important distinctions as to when a low-carb diet may not be beneficial.  The supports are made for athletes, adrenal fatigue, thyroid imbalance, gut dysbiosis, pregnancy and more; times when the body is in a chronic state of stress.

I think this information is important for those of you that are considering going “Paleo” or more importantly want to create a long-term diet that helps you feel amazing.

I’d like to hear from you.  Have you tried eating more fats and giving up carbohydrates in the form of grains, breads and pastas?  How have you felt?

Lynn

Eating foods you need on a healthy budget?

I hear often from my clients how much more expensive it is to purchase whole foods, especially of the organic, free range, grass-fed kind.  I too have experienced that “safe”, more nutrient dense foods can be more costly.  But I also have found that there are shortcuts to saving money while eating really really well.  Some of my practices include purchasing some bulk foods from a wholesaler (frozen grass-fed meats) and frozen organic fruits and berries.  But what are other ideas?

I’ve praised the environmental working group (ewg.org) in other blog entries for their services that they offer including toxins evaluation of over 60,000 products.  But they’ve done it again with a tremendous FREE resource of how to eat healthy on a budget.   In this link you’ll find:

  • suggested vegetables that are less costly and most nutrient dense
  • suggested meats and fish that are safe to eat and affordable
  • meal ideas and recipes
  • and even how to budget specifically.  Like this really great tool below:

For every $25 you can spend on food, experts suggest:

• $6 for vegetables• $5 for fruits • $4 for grains • $4-5 for proteins • $4 for dairy • $1-2 for oils and other foods (check it out on page 28)

This is a “must read” for any household that wants to eat healthy but needs resources and direction.

I went there…

I’m not an Immunologist but do research and have a personal interest in vaccines. The first three years of my son’s life involved healthy development. For one and half years following he experienced multiple seizures daily. The “pill for an ill” model was not effective. His seizures worsened. Once we sought biochemical supports, we identified my son was toxic in aluminum (an adjuvant used in vaccines) and that his detoxification pathways were “blocked”. Finally, within 2 weeks of addressing his detoxification pathways his seizures ended. He has remained seizure free for nearly 4 years.

My last 5 years has been devoted to my son’s recovery, the focus on systems support rather than symptom support, biochemical pathways specifically and nutrition. I spend much of my time researching on the interplay between hormones, immune, digestion, detoxification, the environment and neurotransmitters. I practice as a Functional Diagnostic Practitioner and encounter daily multiple instances of women, men and children experiencing all types of chronic diseases.

I believe SB 277 is not a bill predicated on science but rather a true conflict of interests driven by the government for profit driven purposes. As a nation, with the most vaccinated children in the world, our children are experiencing an epidemic of chronic disease.

“Fifty years ago, when the immunization schedule contained only four vaccines (for diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis and smallpox), autism was virtually unknown”. i In the past 20 years, autism has increased to 1 in 68 (from 1 in 20,000), ADHD has increased by at least 400 percent, asthma by 300 percent and allergies by 400 percent . ii Childhood type 1 diabetes runs risk in 1 in 400 children and childhood arthritis affects nearly 300,000 children.iii The food industry would be a logical finger-point of origin but let’s remember that the same government that decides what foods are safe to eat also governs the current vaccine schedule.

We’ve been advised that vaccinations are unavoidably “safe” yet, the current vaccination schedule has never been studied with truly vaccinated vs unvaccinated individuals and never studied with multiple vaccines delivered at once, specifically 49 doses in 14 vaccines by age 6.iv  Vaccines are prepared with adjuvants such as aluminum, mercury, MSG, formaldehyde, polysorbate 80 (foreign substances) with unpredictable inflammatory responses.

Thousands of parents that have witnessed permanent health issues and even death in their children after they received vaccines and yet are unable to sue the pharmaceutical companies due to a liability protection designed by the government. Allow me to emphasize: Pharmaceutical companies that manufacture vaccines are protected. There are no checks and balances. How can the government assist the pharmaceutical companies without proper safety data and allow no recourse? v

We know that in the first years of life the brain is reaching 80% development by age 2. An infant’s immune-response is heightened compared to a fully developed individual. vi We also know that nearly half of the world population has impaired detoxification <methylation> pathways (cannot support the excretion of metals and toxins).vii  And yet the government is attempting to enforce mandatory 24 doses of vaccines before age 2!

Am I against vaccines? No. Virulent diseases such as polio and diphtheria should be vaccinated against. If I were to vaccine my children all over again, I would

• Not allow my children to be vaccinated until after 2 years of age
• Not allow a vaccine if my child was feeling ill on the day of the injection
• Only permit virulent vaccines
• Only allow one vaccine injection per visit, not cluster-fed multiple vaccines.

We need to protect our children in their development, first and foremost. With the rise of immune diseases resulting from antibiotic resistance and autoimmunity, a lack of scientific research to substantiate the administering multiple vaccines at once (let alone injecting in our infants), no liability carried by the pharmaceutical companies, SB 277 will be putting our children at even greater risk of chronic disease.

Digestion has to do with allergies?

Food allergies (or sensitivities) occur because of three factors: nutritional, immune and inflammatory. Eating foods serves multiple purposes: to provide both macro and micronutrients for the functions of systems; support optimal function of the brain; provide fuel for the performance of the body and so on.  The processes that are involved to meet these purposes involves digestion and detoxification.   When exploring the three factors that contribute to allergies, digestion must be supported.

The digestive process begins in the mouth when food is chewed and mixed with saliva.  It’s then swallowed and travels into the stomach where acid then helps to break down the food particles.  These particles travels through the intestinal tract where digestive enzymes are activated and further breakdown the food particles.   At any one of these stages, there may be breakdowns that don’t allow the entire breakdown and absorption of nutrients.  Low stomach acid and low digestive enzymes can result in larger food particles.

When food is not completely broken down it creates partial proteins and other molecules that the immune system identifies as foreign invaders.  The immune system follows by attacking these proteins and molecules.  The end result is an allergic response.  An allergic response creates a chronic inflammatory response.  In general, inefficiencies within the digestive system can result in an allergic and inflammatory response and nutritional deficiencies.

Why the depletion of stomach acid and digestive enzymes, especially in children?  Medications, heavy metals, dysbiosis in the GI tract (can result from C-Section deliveries), refined foods, sugars, food allergies (not detected early), to name a few.

What to do?

Support the digestive system first, before adding other supplements.  Probiotics, essential fatty acids (low levels are correlated with allergies), stomach acid (if H.Pyroluria has been ruled out), digestive enzymes and a clean sugar free diet is necessary to improve the health of digestive system, reduce inflammation and reduce, if not stop, the allergic response.

So you have your DNA results…now what?

Many of you have expressed an interest in getting the results of your genetic makeup.   I’ve spent hours studying and a weekend in Seattle, WA learning about gene variances and what can be done about them.  The news is: your genes are fixed BUT they can be turned on OR off.  Lifestyle choices including diet, exercise and even supplementation can help determine whether those genes are turned on OR off.

I do find knowing your genetic variances helpful, but not necessarily the best directive.  I’m more interested in how the body is performing and can usually interpret by seeking certain metabolic markers from a variety of lab tests.

But if you’ve pursued your genetic makeup through the very affordable company 23andme.com ($99 at the time of this blog) you can get a highly beneficial FREE interpretation of those results detailing nutritional supports/supplements to take and to avoid.  This information is invaluable in promoting a body that performing optimally.  Did I mention free?

Here’s the link.

Nutrahacker

Genetic Genie is another option but I find nutrahacker provides more specific information on supplementation.

If you are interested in more information on genetic variances, please refer to my blog article “Genetics do not cause Epidemics

How to identify nutritional deficiencies…

Nutritional deficiencies are one of 9 areas of chronic inflammation (you can read more about them here) that I address with my clients.  It’s a difficult area to address specific nutrient deficiencies for a few reasons.  Identifying specific nutritional deficiencies can be become quite costly especially when ordering blood tests for each vitamin or mineral. Assessing by dosing and toleration is another approach, but one deficiency alone may not address a complex need for multiple nutritional supports.

I do offer self-assessments that are to completed by each client, on an as needed basis. These are helpful in targeting specific nutrients.  I’ve also used the Organic Acids Test to help identify not only nutritional deficiencies with B Vitamins but also assess bacterial and fungal infections, and depleted markers in detoxification, mitochondrial and neurotransmitters.

But just recently I was introduced to a lab test that can detect a multitude of deficiencies.   The lab Spectracell offers a detailed assessment of an individuals highly targeted micronutrient deficiencies.  In F.D.N. my generalized approach is exploring H.I.D.D.E.N. stressors (hormone, immune, digestion, detoxification, environment and neurotransmitters).  All of the micronutrients listed below can lead to a malfunction of any or more of these systems. If you are suffering from any illness including: autoimmune disease, neurological disorders, fatigue, headaches, sleep disorders, digestive problems (to name a few) Spectracell is warranted.    Spectracell offers this test through a qualified practitioner (that’s me :)) . It’s at a great price too:$390 cash or $190 with proof of insurance.

If you are interested in understanding nutritional deficiencies this may be a great addition to any healing protocol that you are working with.

Monsanto hates these recent findings…

The predominantly used weed killer, glyphosphate, pushed by Monsanto for the last few decades has been declared a “probable carcinogen” by the World Health Organization.  Glyphosphate (as one of the organophosphates)  has been linked to non-hodgkins lymphoma, lung cancer and known cancer in animals.  Other countries including Denmark, France and Brazil are moving to ban the well marketed  “Round up” that Monsanto has falsely promoted as a safe pesticide.

Exposure to Round up and other organophosphates are linked to antibiotic resistance, compromised immunity and heavy toxic loads associated with diabetes and obesity.  Because glyphosphate can’t be “rinsed” from the fruit the exposure to this toxic and damaging substance can reach every household in America.

Over 20,000 farmers are at risk of developing symptoms such as vomiting, skin rashes, leukemia, brain cancer, birth defects, and nerve damage from working at close range.   Drinking water that has been contaminated with glyphosphate is linked to kidney damage.

Monsanto is pursuing a retraction of this “damming report”.

Buy organic whenever you can.   Refer to my blog on the dirty dozen that are high in pesticides.
